Our Early Years Projects

During the Conductive Music Early Years sessions, children (ages 3-6) will build an electronic instrument using everyday objects like fruit and vegetables. They will play with the instrument, interacting with digital sounds and creating music. Children will be led in short group music skills activities throughout the sessions and will be encouraged to take part in group performances of simple songs.

Learning outcomes are: Understand how an electronic circuit works. Use the principle of conductivity to create circuits with the MakeyMakey board. Use new music technology (makeymakey boards) to create their own instruments. Develop musical skills. Some children may progress further and will perform short musical pieces in groups.

Primary School Sessions

Our Primary School sessions are pitched for children (ages 6-10, KS2-3) as an exciting blend of music and science learning. During the sessions, children will build an electronic instrument using everyday objects like fruit and vegetables. They will play with the instrument, interacting with digital sounds and creating music. Children will be led in short group music skills activities throughout the sessions and will gain a fun, engaging experience in new digital technology.

Learning outcomes: Understand how an electronic circuit works. Use the principle of conductivity to create circuits. Use new music technology (makey makey boards) to create their own instruments. Begin to use digital audio workstation (DAW) software to produce electronic sounds. Use the DAW to change sound parameters, such as volume and panning. Develop ensemble playing skills. Respond to musical signals to manipulate pitch and rhythm. Some children may progress further and will improvise solos and accompaniments.

Secondary Schools

During the Conductive Music secondary school sessions, young people (ages 12-18) create their own electronic instrument using everyday objects. They also write and produce their own music using their new instrument. We offer two progression stages for secondary schools: Intro to Conductive Music and MakeIt.WearIt.PlayIt. Details regarding these can be found below. In both stages, students are introduced to the world of Music Technology through a program including computer programming, electronics manufacture, instrument design, project planning, teamwork, composition and performance. We particularly target these sessions to young people facing challenging circumstances – PRU, FSM, EAL and other ‘at-risk’ categories. Students will work with professional musicians, supporting tutors, and cutting-edge technology to create a new interface for musical expression while exploring key skills for science, engineering, and music.
